We talk to Enya about her journey so far...

Australian born, Enya Angel is no stranger to the EDM world. With over 30 featured vocal and lyric credits internationally, she continues to take over the electronic dance music scene with releases on labels such as Cloud Nine Recordings, Full Stop Records, Silver Wave Recordings, and Paradoxium with artists such as Dimatik, Amir, Nick Goldsmith, Deepdink, Xessiv, Xypo, and Adaptiv.

Collaborating with talented producers and DJ's is what Enya does best, and with over 7k followers on Soundcloud alone, she is on her way to the top of the EDM world. 2016 has seen Enya write and feature on the Electric Love Festival Anthem by Austrian DJ Felice. The track, titled “Enough” was used as the official remix contest song, and features on the ELF2016 Official Soundtrack and the ELF2016 Remix EP.

She was born on the Gold Coast into a family of performers and has lived in the UK and Malta before settling in Melbourne… for now. She’s experienced life in many different places and she’s experienced music in many different ways. We asked her to tell us a little bit more about it.

Tell us about your singing journey. How did you get into singing?

I’m a 3rd generation performer, so singing is definitely in my blood. I grew up watching my parents on stage and in film, so I feel like there’s always been a heavy influence of performing and all round creativity. I started singing lessons when I was 7, and started performing professionally from a young age. I love creative writing and poetry so songwriting was just a natural progression.

What’s your singing dream? Any major goals?

It’s a little bit cheesy but I’d love to sing with Josh Groban. My gosh he can sing! I’m a bit of a classical and theatre nut, so… goals! I also have some EDM music goals. For instance, writing for Shaun Frank or Kygo would be a dream come true.

What are your upcoming releases?

I have mainly worked with international artists, so I’m pretty stoked to be currently working with quite a few Aussie producers right now. I have over 18 upcoming releases, but to name a few locals, I have new songs with Nick Goldsmith, Dimatik, Amir, and Olli Willand out soon. I wish I could say a few more, but for confidentiality reasons, I can’t say my big label releases! *Secretly excited*

Is there a particular warm up process you have before recording?

Yes! I have worked and trained extensively as a vocal coach and I cannot stress warming up enough! I love lip rolls, sirens, and piano scales the best. I always warm up for at least 30 mins before recording

Tell us about your songwriting process - is there a particular way you tackle the topline?

I find writing the easiest part about the process. I start with listening to the track, and I record any and all ad-libs and improv that I come up with on the first listen, just with my phone recorder. I then listen back, and take out parts I like and work on them. I also really love working with a set theme or title. I find if I can think of a hook line or a really great pre-drop line, I can write the verses around that quite quickly.

What’s your biggest success to date?

Writing and singing the 2016 Electric Love Festival (Austria) Anthem with Felice. They used the track as the official song for the remix contest, and I gained thousands of new fans and followers from it! And my music was played for over 30, 000 people with festival headliners Jack U, The Chainsmokers, Armin Van Buuren, KSHMR, Hardwell, Deorro and more! Very, very exciting. The official festival soundtrack and Remix EP have also both been released, with my song!

P.S. I guess I should also mention that I’m currently the face of Vodafone Australia’s campaign. I sing on the ad and talk about my songwriting work. HOW COOL IS THAT?!

P.P.S. Ok one more. Opening for The Potbeleez in January with my band Pluvio for the 2016 Stage One International Film Festival. Now that was wicked!

Who would you most like to work with, and why?

Ultimately, Kygo. I think he is a true musician and artist, not just a producer, and not just a DJ. His music is very inspiring. And Flume, because he’s just Flume. You know? FLUME.

Which artists do you find inspiring? Why?

Haha see my answer above! No jokes. I’m girl crushing on Delaney Jane at the moment. Her lyrics are so great. Oh and Halsey! Oh my gosh talk about beauty and brains. Her voice and words are mesmerising, and she’s fought a lot of battles to be where she is now. Respect!

Who is your favourite singer? Why?

Of all time? Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic. His range and control is insane. And his lyrics are genius. If you haven’t heard of him, google him. I guarantee he’s written most of your favourite songs.

What are your top 5 favourite records of all time?

February Song by Josh Groban

Deep South by Cartel.

Red Eyes by The War On Drugs.

I Can’t Go On Without You by Kaleo.

Too Easy by OneRepublic.

Yes, I have a very eclectic taste in music!

What’s your guilty pleasure song?

Poison – Bardot. I used to work for Tiffani Wood from Bardot and she’s lovely, and I’ve always been a fan!

Do you have a home studio? If so, tell us about your setup?

Yes I do. It’s built into my walk in wardrobe. Yoga mats, foam, and clothes surround it haha. I have my speakers, keyboard, mic stand, mics, amps etc all there. It’s so pretty.

Do you have a favourite microphone? If so, why?

I use the Rode NT1-A but my favourite is the Avantone CV-12. That’s my next purchase.

How did you find singing jobs before Vocalizr?

Freelance through facebook, starnow.com, etc. Never, ever found something so easy and accessible as Vocalizr though.

Have you made new connections through Vocalizr? Has it opened any doors for you?

So so so many doors. I don’t know where I’d be in my career if it weren’t for Vocalizr. My manager found me on there, Felice (Electric Love Festival) found me on there, and it has expanded my career horizons ten-fold.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what are 3 things you couldn’t live without?

I’m really practical, so… potable drinking water! And another person (I’d go crazy alone), and of course music.
