Spotlight: Mat Imagin
More than just a producer, Mat Imagin brings his understanding of music and composition to his unique brand of production. He takes inspiration from his environment and everyday life and filters it into creative compositions. Not one to be restricted to a particular genre, he lets the music take him in whatever direction feels natural. He draws from his foundation in drums, keyboard and guitar to infuse life into his tracks. That, paired with over a decade spent honing his production skills, makes for a certainty that only comes with being as seasoned as he is. It is this same confidence that comes across to listeners all over the world through his music.
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Mat grew up surrounded by music so his chosen vocation came naturally. He still lives in H-Town and still loves being surrounded by music.
Below, we find out why he doesn’t like to limit himself to one specific production method or genre of music and what he looks for in a singer.
Tell us about your musical journey – how did you get into production?
I’ve been around music as far back as I can remember. I had many different family members involved in music, one way or another. From uncles and cousins playing in bands and singing in choir, to others just strumming a guitar occasionally. It was always a part of my life in one way or another, and that continues in the present as well.
What’s your major career goal?
To have my music shared on a large stage, for many people to hear. I do love movies, so having a song I made played during a film would be amazing!
What are your upcoming releases?
I have a pop song called Got You that's about to come out. I think this is one of the best songs I've been involved with so far. I'm finishing up with the artwork now, then it's good to go!
Tell us about your setup – from your studio to your DAW. What’s your favorite piece of gear?
I have a fairly straightforward setup, as pretty much everything I use is software based. I use a midi keyboard, plugged into a Focusrite Scarlett audio interface. To hear the sounds I’m creating, I have Yamaha HS8s. I also have a few guitars laying around as well.
Tell us about your production process. Do you have a particular formula you keep to?
I don’t have one specific method of doing things. It can vary. Sometimes I start with the drums and percussion to get a rhythm going, and then build off of that. Other times I’ll start with a melody, or even just a sound I like, and take things from there.
What’s your biggest success to date?
I think my biggest successes are yet to come. A few publishing companies have recruited me to produce songs for them. So that’s always nice.
Out of all the records you’ve made, what’s your favorite and why?
Probably whichever one is the newest. lol! If I had to choose one though, it would probably be one called Too Late. I just think the singer I worked with has a captivating voice, and I liked the lyrics she came up with.
Who would you most like to work with, and why?
There are a lot of artists I would love to collaborate with. The Weeknd has been one of my favorites since he came out. I’m also a big Beyoncé and Rihanna fan. I usually gravitate towards creative, talented people, so I’m always adding people to the wish list.
Which artists do you find inspiring? Why?
I’m inspired by artists whose music makes you feel something. I really like The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, Banks, Drake and many more.
Who is your favorite producer? Why?
I don’t really have one specific favorite. I hear things I like from many different producers. There are just so many different sounds and styles. Of recent years, Clams Casino has been one that I pay a lot of attention to. I just like his creativity and completely unique sound.
What are your top 5 favorite records of all time?
That’s extremely difficult to say. If I had to choose, these are the ones that jump to mind:
Trilogy by The Weeknd
The Chronic by Dr Dre
Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg
Illmatic by Nas
Hell on Earth by Mobb Deep
That could easily change though, depending on the mood.
What’s your guilty pleasure song?
There’s probably quite a few, but I would go with A Kiss From a Rose by Seal. I love that song!
What do you look for in a singer?
Firstly, someone whose voice immediately grabs your attention. The type that has you scrambling to pull up Shazam before the song ends to see who it is. Then other qualities like great songwriting and melodies. Also having a good ear for choosing production helps a lot.
Have you made new connections through Vocalizr? Has it opened any doors for you?
I’ve connected with quite a few talented singers on Vocalizr, and there are many others I hope to work with in the future.
If you were stuck on a deserted island, what are 3 things you couldn’t live without?
Cell phone, Toilet paper, Bear Grylls.
